“Often the tub drain is full of hair which slows the water down as it drains out of the tub. Once again the Zip-it tool or a pair of needle nose pliers are great tools that can be used to reach in and clear out the debris in the drain. If there is a tub stopper in the drain you may have to remove the tub stopper before getting to the hair clog. It is a good idea to clear out the debris in the tub drain on a regular basis even if the tub is not draining slowly.”

“On the inside, expect valves to need replacing every so often. If you’re lucky, you can go 15 years depending on frequency of use. Home improvement website The Family Handyman also mentioned several issues that may hound bathrooms and bath tub drain leaks is one of those they discussed. According to the write-up, the key is to immediately address this type of drain issue as it can cause a chain of plumbing and water damage issues.

“Drain leaks allow water to sneak around the outside of the drain where it’s connected to the tub or shower. This is especially common with plastic or fiberglass tubs and shower pans, since these materials flex slightly when you stand on them, often breaking the seal around the drain. These leaks can stain or destroy the ceiling below or rot floor joists. In the case of a tub set on a concrete slab, the leak will ruin flooring in the bathroom or adjoining rooms.”
