Using Portable Heaters

For some people, space heaters can be a more efficient way of heating the home. It however comes with some safety risks that could endanger the whole household.

The Electrical Safety Foundation has provided important information on staying safe while using portable heaters around the home or office. Plumbing Association of San Diego  http://www.phccsd.org/

“Space heater safety is not just a residential concern. Portable electric space heaters are also used in workplaces across the country and can pose a major workplace safety hazard. Fires can be caused by space heaters without adequate safety features, space heaters placed near combustibles, or space heaters that are improperly plugged in.  If an employer does not have a written policy specifically forbidding the use of space heaters on company property, it is critical that they establish and publish guidelines for their safe use. “

 Space Heating and its Risks

There are ways to stay safe while utilizing space heaters or portable heaters. The website Consumer Search discussed about the topic lengthily in one of its posts. A/C And HVAC

“Finding the right place to put your space heater is the first step. Space heaters should be located on a level, hard and nonflammable surface — a ceramic tile floor is ideal. Don’t put a space heater on a piece of furniture. Keep it well away from the normal paths of foot traffic in your home to prevent it from being accidentally knocked over. Keep combustible materials at least three feet away in all directions. Typical combustibles found in your home include draperies, rugs and bedding. Except in cases where a space heater is designed for a bathroom or for outdoor use, do not use it in damp areas.”

“Only purchase newer model heaters that have all of the current safety features. Make sure the heater carries the Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL) label. Choose a thermostatically controlled heater, because they avoid the energy waste of overheating a room. Select a heater of the proper size for the room you wish to heat. Do not purchase oversized heaters. Most heaters come with a general sizing table.”
